SAN FRANCISCO, January 20, 2026 — Airbnb has begun testing an AI-driven search feature with a small group of users, allowing them to describe travel preferences in natural language and receive tailored listing suggestions, the company confirmed Monday.
The experimental tool, available only to a limited percentage of users in the U.S., lets people type or speak queries such as “a quiet cabin near a lake for a weekend getaway with my dog” or “family-friendly apartment in Barcelona with a pool and close to Gaudí sites.” The AI interprets the request, considers filters like dates, guests, and amenities, and returns personalized results ranked by relevance.
Airbnb said the feature uses large language models to understand intent and context better than keyword-based search. Early testers can refine suggestions by chatting with the AI, adding details like budget, vibe, or must-have features.
The tool pulls from Airbnb’s existing inventory and applies standard ranking factors, including host ratings, price, and availability.
A company spokesperson described the test as exploratory: “We’re experimenting with AI to make searching for stays more intuitive and conversational, helping people discover places that match exactly what they’re looking for.” Airbnb emphasized that the feature is optional and that users can switch back to traditional search at any time.
The test follows similar AI search experiments by competitors like Booking.com and Expedia, which have integrated generative tools to handle vague or detailed queries.
Airbnb has already used AI for other features, including listing description generation and photo enhancement, but this marks its first major push into conversational search.
User feedback will shape whether the tool expands beyond the test group. Airbnb has not shared a timeline for wider availability or details on which models power the feature.
The experiment reflects the travel industry’s broader adoption of generative AI to improve discovery and personalization, particularly as travelers increasingly seek unique, tailored experiences.
