SAN FRANCISCO, March 4, 2026 — Google has begun rolling out the “Canvas” feature within Gemini’s AI Mode in Search to all U.S. users, allowing people to generate, edit, and iterate on structured content such as documents, code, reports, and presentations directly inside the search interface.

Canvas appears as an interactive panel alongside traditional search results when users enter queries that benefit from longer-form output (e.g., “write a business plan for a coffee shop” or “create a Python script for data analysis”).

The AI generates an initial draft, then lets users refine it through natural language instructions—such as “make it shorter,” “add a budget section,” “change the tone to professional,” or “convert this to bullet points.”

The feature is built on Gemini 2.0 models and supports real-time collaboration-like editing without leaving the Google Search page. Users can export the finished Canvas to Google Docs, Sheets, or other Workspace apps, or copy it directly.

Google says Canvas is designed for tasks that require multiple revisions, such as brainstorming, outlining, writing emails, or generating code snippets.

The rollout began gradually in late February and is now reaching all U.S. users on desktop and mobile. International expansion is expected in the coming months, with support for additional languages and more complex workflows planned.

Google Search VP Liz Reid commented: “Canvas brings the power of generative AI directly into the search experience, turning one-shot answers into living, editable documents that evolve with the user’s needs.”

The feature is available in AI Mode (the enhanced AI-powered search view) and does not require a subscription, though Gemini Advanced users receive higher usage quotas and priority access during peak times.

Early user feedback has been mostly positive, with praise for the seamless editing flow, though some have noted occasional hallucinations or formatting inconsistencies that still require manual fixes.

Canvas represents Google’s latest attempt to keep Search relevant in an era where standalone chatbots and AI apps are capturing more complex query sessions. The company continues to position Search as the primary entry point for AI assistance.
