One of the operators of DanishBits who was arrested last year was now sentenced to a one-year jail term. The 33yo man was charged for running the now-defunct torrent tracker, which served thousands of users to search for illegal torrents. The man has reportedly earned nearly $40,000 from the illegal operation, which is ordered to pay to the Rights Alliance of Denmark.
DanishBits Operator Jailed
As the name says, Torrent trackers are the platforms that let you be updated on your desired content torrents. Subscribing to them, youโll be notified whenever thereโs an update on your preferences. One such popular torrent tracker in Denmark was DanishBits, which was shut down last year after arresting one of its operators.
The 33yo operator was termed one of the siteโs ringmasters, was arrested in Morocco last year, and later extradited to Denmark. Soon after his arrest, the DanishBits site was shut down by Denmark law enforcement. Alongside, another torrent tracker called NordicBits was also shut down after the siteโs operator died of serious illness.
Now, as the 33yo operator of DanishBits admitted his illegal operations, the Copenhagen City Court has handed him a one-year jail sentence which includes a nine-month conditional term. Denmark police started the crackdown of thisย after a complaint filed by Rights Alliance, which represents several copyright holders in Denmark.
After the DanishBits takeover, the SรIK IP-Task Force has even targeted some of its users, as the database was also captured. Alongside the jail term, the 33yo operator was also ordered to pay the sum (around $40,000) earned from this illegal operation to Rights Alliance as compensation. The DanishBits operators have allegedly earned over $160,000 from running it.
