Since border tensions between India and China rose, the Indian Ministry of Information Technology has just announced the ban on 59 Chinese apps, citing security reasons. Apps in the list are expected since so many recommendations were received earlier. The names include popular apps like TikTok, Share It, UC browser, WeChat, etc.
India Officially Bans TikTok!
The Indian government has reasoned this ban as these apps are ‘”engaged in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, the security of the state and public order“.
These apps are blamed for stealing and transferring the user data outside of India, where the nation doesn’t have the right to control it. The government also detailed that compilation of these data, mining, and profiling by elements can affect the national security and defense of India.
The apps include many known names like UC browser, Share It, TikTok but not PUBG Mobile! This surprised everyone why the popular battle royale game wasn’t banned for! After all, PUBG Mobile too has caused enough disruption among Indian youth, but possibly be spared for not transmitting any sensitive data! On the other hand, TikTok was blamed for many reasons including a recent issue of copying clipboard content!
TikTok has more than 600 million installs from India, with at least 200 million active users. This makes the Indian market huge for the app, with China and the US in the next places. Share It and UC browser to are well-known names in the Indian community. The decision taken today potentially block China’s cyber control on Indian’s, thus mitigating the risk of any potential cyberattack. The entire list of banned apps include;
