Just as we see Intel losing ground in its own game, the company said it’s starting to produce 4nm (Intel 4) chips for its future Core generations.
This is in line with Intel’s plans of reaching the top spot in the semiconductor business, where it aims to produce 1nm chips in 2025! The company is also planning to start the manufacturing of 20A (2nm) and 18A (1.8nm) process technologies later next year.
Intel 4 Chips for Meteor Lake
Throughout the last decade, Intel has been overshadowed by a number of players like TSMC, Samsung, and AMD in its own game. Just as we feel that the Blue team is losing its charm, it announced aggressive plans for rebuilding its glory – by reaching the grand milestone of making a 1nm chip by 2025.
In this pursuit, Intel has just begun manufacturing the Intel 4 (4nm) chips for its future processors. This process mode technology will be used in the upcoming Meteor Lake CPUs, also known as the 14th-generation chips.
This is much needed for the company, as it’s still surviving on the 7nm process chips (Alder Lake and Raptor Lake series) – while the industry is moving to 3nm chips. Well, Intel is trying hard not to fall behind, and its timeline for reaching the 1nm process node by 2025 is an example of that.
Years after introducing its own process node fabrication strategy, Intel is now starting to make 4nm chips, as confirmed by the President of Intel China’s Research Institute, Song Jiqiang. He cited a recent meeting where Intel unveiled these plans and also a timeline for its 20A and 18A plans.
As per its timeline, Intel will announce the 20A (2nm) process node by early next year, with concerning production starting later that year. Whereas the 18A (1.8nm) process node will be unveiled in the second half of 2024, with production starting in early 2025. With the advancement of these, Intel is hoping to push through the heavy competition from TSMC and Samsung in this space.
